20 October 2026 | Andhra Pradesh | Analysis and explainer
Andhra Pradesh's local-election process is entering a decisive stage: urban nominations have closed, scrutiny was scheduled for 19 October, and withdrawals and final candidate lists are due on 21 October. The filing totals describe the nomination stage, not the final ballot or voter support.
The notified urban round covers 100 bodies: 13 municipal corporations, 77 municipalities and 10 nagar panchayats. Reporting on the SEC announcement says another 23 urban bodies were deferred because of legal issues.
The 13 corporations are Greater Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Vizianagaram, Eluru, Machilipatnam, Guntur, Ongole, Nellore, Tirupati, Chittoor, Kadapa, Kurnool and Anantapur. These are local-government contests; the urban filing figures should not be combined with rural nominations as one election count.
The SEC's 14 October timetable sets out separate urban and rural tracks.
MPTC and ZPTC refer to territorial constituencies at mandal-parishad and zilla-parishad level. The SEC schedule also provides separate dates for re-polls if needed. Readers should check their own local notice for the applicable constituency and polling arrangements.
A published 19 October tally reports 24,451 ward-member nominations and 1,358 mayor/chairperson nominations: 25,809 filings combined. The party breakdown below is from that report, before scrutiny and withdrawals.

Other parties and independents account for the remaining filings. These are nomination counts, not certified numbers of distinct candidates, seats contested or final alliance nominees. KROV has not independently reconciled the statewide filing abstract with scrutiny results. Published ward totals also conflict, so a definitive statewide ward count is not stated here.
TDP, Jana Sena and BJP form the ruling NDA/Kutami alliance. YSRCP is the principal opposition competitor; Congress, other parties and independents also feature in the filing tally. Local reporting describes overlapping alliance nominations and ward-level allocation disputes in Vijayawada. Withdrawal-stage lists will clarify the actual contests.
The following are reported party nominees, not a complete or certified post-withdrawal list.
YSRCP alleges that intimidation, attacks and obstruction prevented candidates from participating freely and has sought intervention. TDP rejects that account and accuses YSRCP of provoking violence. These are competing allegations; they do not establish responsibility for individual incidents.
High filing numbers cannot by themselves predict a winner or settle complaints about access to nominations. The next meaningful checks are final candidate lists, verified uncontested declarations, complaint outcomes and the actual vote. Alliance coordination should be judged from the final contests, rather than adding allied parties' nomination papers together.
