African health specialists are calling for stronger cross-border coordination after Bundibugyo Ebola cases were reported in Kenya and Nigeria, according to Dann Okoth's October 26 SciDev.Net report. The reporting links the calls to the continuing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and pressure on surveillance and response systems.
The report says Africa CDC is working with health ministries in Congo, Kenya and Nigeria on surveillance, preparedness and response. It also reports that an extraordinary meeting of African health ministers has been convened for October 28. This is a scheduled meeting, rather than a completed agreement on funding or containment measures.
Scientific development also remains distinct from approval. SciDev.Net reports that the TUMAINI phase 2/3 vaccine trial began enrolling participants in Bunia on October 23. The study is intended to build evidence on vaccine candidates against Bundibugyo virus; starting a trial does not establish that a vaccine is approved or that protection has been demonstrated for this outbreak.
The report also describes an early-stage rapid-test project and concerns about resources for laboratory work, contact tracing and community engagement. Neither the test's development nor the planned regional talks should be presented as a completed solution.
