Cabinet Secretary T. V. Somanathan chaired a National Crisis Management Committee meeting on October 26 to review cyclone preparedness with Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Puducherry officials. A Cabinet Secretariat release describes preparations by state administrations and central response agencies.
State representatives reported that shelters and evacuation arrangements were in place, district control rooms had been activated and disaster-response teams were on standby. The NDRF reported deployed teams as well as additional teams on standby. The armed forces and Coast Guard said rescue and relief personnel, ships and aircraft had been kept ready. These are reported readiness measures, not evidence that every evacuation or rescue has been completed.
The Cabinet Secretary set avoiding loss of life and limiting damage as objectives, and called for essential services to be restored quickly if disrupted. He also directed that eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar be suitably alerted through the Home Ministry and IMD. An objective of preventing casualties is not a guarantee of the eventual outcome.
This article reports the new preparedness review. It does not issue a fresh weather alert or reproduce the release's older storm-position and landfall forecasts as current conditions.
