ICAR’s Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has supplied an additional five lakh hatchery-produced green mussel seeds to fishers and tribal communities in Maharashtra, according to a PIB release dated 24 October 2026. The institute says this takes the cumulative green mussel seed supply over the past six months to ten lakh. The latest delivery and cumulative total are separate figures.
The 2–4 millimetre seeds were produced at CMFRI’s Vizhinjam Regional Centre in Thiruvananthapuram under a Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana project. Separately, one lakh oyster seeds produced at its Madras Regional Station were supplied to Maharashtra. The oyster quantity is not part of the ten-lakh green mussel total.
CMFRI also trained 30 officials from Maharashtra’s Mangrove Cell in nursery rearing and farming techniques for mussels and oysters. The Mangrove and Marine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation in Maharashtra is coordinating farmer participation, seed supply and technical guidance, with support from the Union Department of Fisheries.
The initiative is intended to broaden coastal livelihood options through bivalve farming. Seed delivery and official training do not establish a completed harvest, a measured income increase or guaranteed returns. The institute’s account makes suitable water quality, site selection, monitoring and harvesting practices important conditions for farming outcomes.
