ISRO launched the NVS-03 navigation satellite from Sriharikota aboard GSLV-F18 at 11:51 p.m. on October 30, according to a November 1 PIB backgrounder. The rocket placed it in a geosynchronous transfer orbit, and the first orbit manoeuvre was completed at 4:48 p.m. on October 31.
The update establishes progress beyond the earlier webcast announcement. Further manoeuvres are planned to move the satellite to its designated geosynchronous slot at 111.75° East; the release does not say that this final placement or operational commissioning has been completed.
A transfer orbit is an intermediate stage. The satellite uses onboard propulsion to change its orbit before reaching its intended working position. The backgrounder says NVS-03 used its Liquid Apogee Motor for the orbit-raising manoeuvre. Launch success and a first manoeuvre therefore remain distinct from completion of all deployment steps.
NVS-03 is the third satellite in the five-satellite second-generation NavIC series. It carries navigation payloads in the L1, L5 and S bands and an indigenous atomic clock alongside procured clocks, according to PIB. Precise timing supports satellite-based positioning and navigation.
NavIC is a regional system covering India and approximately 1,500 km beyond its boundary. The new satellite is intended to strengthen positioning, navigation and timing capabilities used in transport, maritime activity, aviation and other applications. These are intended capabilities; the release provides no new measured improvement in consumer-device accuracy following this launch.
The next milestone is the planned orbital placement and subsequent operational progress, rather than an assumption that every intended service is already available. Source: PIB Research, November 1, 2026, release 2331077, citing ISRO mission and orbit-manoeuvre updates.
