NASA's Langley Research Center and the Virginia Department of Energy have announced a Space Act Agreement to bring satellite-derived solar, weather and climate-risk information into the US state's energy planning. NASA published the announcement on October 23, 2026.
The collaboration will use NASA's Prediction of Worldwide Energy Resources, or POWER, data products in Virginia Energy's modelling and analysis tools. Researchers plan to streamline data exchange, adjust formats and assess whether additional datasets are needed.
The intended uses include examining electricity demand, generation and stresses associated with extreme weather. This is a data-and-planning partnership, rather than the commissioning of a power plant or evidence that energy bills have already fallen. The announced benefits remain goals of the collaboration.
