The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence says it seized about 55,000 e-cigarettes, valued at ₹13.50 crore, in two containers at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata. The operation took place on October 24; the Finance Ministry announced the details through PIB on October 28.
DRI described the containers as Nepal-bound transshipment consignments. Its account says the declared goods were water glasses in one consignment and ceramic mugs in the other, with e-cigarettes concealed among the cargo. These are the enforcement agency’s findings as reported in the release, rather than a court judgment.
The first container contained 40,000 e-cigarettes, while the second contained about 15,000, according to DRI. The agency said it seized the devices together with the cargo used to conceal them under relevant provisions of the Customs Act.
The release gives an estimated seizure value, not a realised sale price, fine or tax recovery. It does not identify an arrested person or announce a conviction in these two operations.
The ministry also reported that DRI had seized about three lakh e-cigarettes worth more than ₹120 crore during financial year 2026–27 across ports, airports and inland container depots in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi and West Bengal. That is a wider year-to-date figure and should not be added to the Kolkata total as though the two were separate categories.
The announcement concerns an October 24 interception; it does not establish a new seizure on the date the details were published.
