Cyprus has reaffirmed support for India’s effort to obtain European Union recognition for eligible Indian ship-recycling facilities, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways reported on October 27, 2026. The position emerged during Sarbananda Sonowal’s meeting with Cyprus Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis in Busan. It is support for India’s bid, rather than an announcement that EU recognition has been granted.
The ministry said about 25 Cypriot companies are expected to visit India in November to explore maritime partnerships. This remains a planned visit.
Separate talks with Korean companies covered potential manufacturing of LNG/LPG cargo tanks, cryogenic structures and ship blocks in India. Cochin Shipyard explored possible block fabrication with Sejin Heavy Industries. These discussions do not establish signed manufacturing contracts or committed investments.
