The defence ministry signed a contract with BEL on October 21 to procure improved low-level lightweight radars for the Indian Army at an approximate cost of ₹770 crore. The signing took place in New Delhi, according to the ministry’s announcement.
The radar system is intended to detect and track fighter-sized targets as well as mini and micro drones, with an additional capability to prioritise aerial targets. The ministry describes the procurement as a step towards indigenous air-defence platforms and domestic defence manufacturing, including MSMEs.
For business readers, the confirmed development is the signed procurement contract. The release does not specify delivery dates or quantities, and the contract value should not be treated as revenue already earned or equipment already delivered.
