An October 23 government backgrounder puts the spotlight on agrivoltaics: growing crops and generating solar electricity on the same land. The explanation comes as the AgriVoltaics World Conference runs in New Delhi from October 21 to 23.
The idea is to use panels above or between crop rows while retaining agricultural activity. Electricity can support farm operations, and suitable arrangements may allow surplus power sales. Partial shade can reduce moisture loss under appropriate conditions, but results depend on the crop, panel design and local environment.
For farmers, the important distinction is between technical potential and an operating project. Solar infrastructure must fit the cultivation system, with enough access for farming and a workable electricity arrangement. Combining two activities on a plot does not by itself guarantee a higher income.
The latest backgrounder describes research, demonstration projects and policy development. Locally suitable designs and farmer participation remain central to implementation.
