Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda inspected a newly constructed patient waiting lounge at the AIIMS Trauma Centre Extension Campus in New Delhi on October 29, 2026. The completed building is proposed for use as an Aashray shelter for patients and attendants, according to a Health Ministry release through PIB.
Bharat Electronics Limited, Ghaziabad, developed the facility under its corporate social responsibility initiative. The ministry reported a revised built-up area of 2,970 square metres and a designed seating capacity of 897 people. The building includes waiting areas, ramps, toilets and entry and exit points. The figure of 897 describes seating capacity, not hospital beds or a confirmed count of people accommodated.
The proposed shelter use is intended to provide covered temporary accommodation for economically disadvantaged patients and attendants travelling to AIIMS for treatment. The release says AIIMS already operates Aashray as a 24-hour shelter, but does not announce an opening date for shelter operations in this new building. The inspection should therefore be distinguished from confirmation that the new facility has begun admitting residents.
