The United Nations climate conference COP31 is scheduled to open on Monday, November 9, in Antalya, Türkiye, and run through November 20. Ahead of the talks, UN climate chief Simon Stiell called for faster access to funding and for governments and other participants to put existing climate pledges into practice. Murat Kurum, the conference’s president-designate, said the focus should be on delivering finance commitments already made.
India plans to seek a decision to start the Climate Finance Work Programme, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said in a briefing released by the Press Information Bureau. India wants predictable funding that comes largely from public sources and is offered on favourable terms without adding to debt burdens. Yadav also said India would press for more funding to adapt to climate impacts and for fewer barriers to sharing technology. These are negotiating priorities ahead of the conference.
