European Union residents held €9,479 billion in net direct investment outside the bloc at the end of 2025, down 2.3% from a year earlier, Eurostat reported on 5 November. The value of direct investment held inside the EU by residents of other economies fell 2.8% to €6,988 billion.
The United States was the largest counterpart in both directions. It accounted for 29.4% of the EU’s outward position and 29.7% of the position held by non-EU investors inside the bloc. The figures measure the value of investment positions at year-end. Eurostat assigns them by immediate counterpart and says the data may be revised. [evidence-1]
