Silicon chip test carries terahertz data at 100 Gbit/s

Researchers led by JNCASR demonstrated terahertz data transmission at up to 100 Gbit/s on an experimental silicon chip, the Science and Technology Ministry reported on November 4. The highest rate came from a signal splitter with an engineered barrier in one branch.

Test conditions

The team measured transmission at 310–360 GHz. Two other designs carried 48 and 60 Gbit/s in high-speed tests. The results point to ways of routing signals on future chips. They describe laboratory devices, and the team plans to investigate adjustable barriers next.
