The Digital India BHASHINI Division demonstrated multilingual AI tools for academic and research use at the ETD-2026 symposium at IIT Delhi, according to a Ministry of Electronics and IT release dated 24 October 2026. The symposium runs from 23 to 25 October.
The workshop covered speech-to-text, translation, optical character recognition and document translation. A demonstration of Shrutlekh showed live transcription with simultaneous translation, presented as a potential tool for lectures, seminars and academic discussions. The release does not provide an independent accuracy benchmark.
Participants discussed adapting document-translation workflows for theses, dissertations and repositories such as Shodhganga. BHASHINI Pragati, developed for the Comptroller and Auditor General, was shown as an example of structured translation and review of large documents. This was an exploration of possible academic applications, not an announcement that Shodhganga’s entire collection has been translated or that a university-wide service is already deployed.
The discussion emphasised domain-specific translation, human review, terminology and quality assurance for specialised scholarly content. BHASHINI invited universities, libraries and research organisations to explore collaboration. The announcement gives no implementation deadline or guarantee that automated translation will preserve every technical meaning without review.
