India and HD Hyundai have outlined further planning steps for a proposed greenfield shipyard at Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu. Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal met HD Hyundai chairman Chung Ki-sun in Seoul on October 28, according to the shipping ministry.
A joint working group will oversee project development. National Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries Park, Tamil Nadu Limited and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering will work towards a joint venture structure, with a detailed project report expected within six months. The report is to address vessel types, capacity, infrastructure, costs and implementation schedule.
Investment structure, equity participation and implementation arrangements remain subject to due diligence and required approvals. The announcement describes a proposed project and preparatory work; it does not establish that the yard is built or operating. Technology transfer and workforce training are planned areas of cooperation.
