Expanding six climate and public health measures worldwide could avert about 1.6 million deaths a year, according to a World Health Organization analysis released on November 4. The estimate comes from modelling what could happen if countries expanded the measures globally.
The analysis looks at heat alerts, drinking-water systems that can withstand climate hazards, basic sanitation, and access to handwashing. It also considers cleaner ways to cook and heat homes, and changes to how fossil fuels are priced. [evidence-1] [evidence-2]
