DiscussionThe story behind the news.

Reid Wiseman has been named deputy director of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California and associate vice president at Caltech, according to a NASA announcement published on October 29. He is due to begin the roles on November 30, 2026. The appointment announcement does not mean he has already taken charge.

Caltech manages JPL for NASA. Wiseman’s responsibilities will include laboratory operations and working with Caltech on institutional planning, management and compliance. The announcement also identifies him as JPL’s primary interface for national security programmes.

The appointment concerns leadership at the laboratory, which works on robotics and deep-space exploration. It does not announce a new spacecraft launch date, mission approval or research funding allocation.
